Hervey Bay

Australian Holidays Ad

The Hervey Bay Whale Watching season starts in Mid July and extends through until early November. Hervey Bay is now the unrivalled whale watching capital of the world with the most modern fleet of whale watching boats and more whales than you can imagine. As the population of southern humpback whales steadily increases there are more and more whales visiting the calm waters of Platypus Bay each year. The whale watching area is now a marine park which extends from Rooneys point on the inside of Fraser Island right through almost to the Urangan boat harbour where the fleet departs from.

The Eastern Australian population of humpback whales has now recovered from almost extinction, to over ten thousand animals and it is increasing by 10% per annum. Many of these animals call into Hervey Bay waters each year and it is a haven for mothers giving birth, lactating mothers and calves and mating males looking for receptive females. The activity in Hervey Bay during the whale watching season is nothing short of spectacular.

There are many innovative ideas incorporated into the design of the boats that make up the whale watching fleet. Underwater windows, Hydrophones to hear the whales singing and underwater video cameras to catch the action as the whales swim by. It is common for the whales to approach the boats in Hervey Bay. Many whales have grown up visiting the whale watching boats every year now for nearly 25 years and they sometimes push their calves right up to the boats to show off their newborns to the spectators. Many of the operators have been in the business since it started and recognise many of the whales that they see from year to year.

There is no other place like Hervey Bay and the Whale Watching here is amazingly better than anywhere else that you may travel to. There is plenty of excellent accommodation in Hervey Bay so you can fly in from Sydney or Brisbane for a weekend or an extended stay and make Hervey Bay whale watching part of your next holiday.
